Ploughshare Tortoise
The Ploughshare Tortoise or Angonoka (Astrochelys yniphora) is considered to be the rarest tortoise in the world. The chance to observe and photograph this beautiful species was one of the highlights of my 2015 trip to Madagascar. |

Wood Turtle
Probably my favourite turtle. I included some flowering Lesser Celandine, in this painting, an invasive plant in Michigan, that I had noticed on my numerous canoe trips to look for Wood Turtles. It is a plant that I know well and is a common riverside plant native to the UK. |

Leatherback Turtle
The largest of all the sea turtles, Leatherback Turtles feed mainly on jellyfish and other soft-bodied marines animals. They have the widest distribution of any turtle. I struggled to find good photographic references to help me correctly paint the soft, backward-pointing, spines that line the turtle’s mouth and throat, and assist in retaining their gelatinous prey. Luckily, at the 27th Sea Turtle Symposium, in Myrtle Beach, I had most of the world’s Leatherback Turtle experts at hand to give me some guidance. Thanks everyone! |

Radiated Tortoise
I based the individuals, in this painting, on the most beautifully marked tortoise shell that I’ve ever seen (a specimen confiscated in Madagascar). The print represents just one section of a much larger painting, which depicted a couple of key Madagascan habitats and several different species. |

Flat-tailed Tortoise
This small and secretive turtle, from Madagascar, is considered to be one of the worlds most threatened species. I based the juvenile specimen, depicted in this painting, on photos of the first specimen hatched by herpetologist Don Reid in a turtle conservation project, in Madagascar. |

Chelodina Expansa
The background in this painting, of a Broad-shelled Turtle, was inspired by the superb photographs by Australian Turtle expert and herpetologist John Cann. John added a few touches of paint to the canvas, during its completion, at one of the NARBC shows. |
