Granite Night Lizards
Granite Night Lizards (Xantusia henshawi). I completed this painting during my period of rehabilitation, after breaking my neck in 2018. It has been used as the cover illustration for the book 'Night Lizards. Field Memoirs and a Summary of the Xantusiidae' by Robert L. Bezy. |

Texas Horned Lizard
The Texas Horned Lizard (Phrynosoma cornutum). Also known as the 'Horned Toad', because of its rounded body, this lizard ranges from Colorado and Kansas to northern Mexico and from Arizona to Texas. They will eat termites, beetles and grasshoppers but their main diet is Harvester Ants. |

Sand Lizard
The Sand Lizard (Lacerta agilis). I'm proud to have played an active part in the study of this beautiful lizard, and the conservation effort that lead to its legal protection, many years ago. It seemed wrong not to depict species amongst the equally beautiful heathland plants with which they are so closely associated, over most of their British range. |

Arboreal Alligator Lizard
Abronia lizards (Abronia graminea) are found in several unique habitats, but they primarily inhabit cloud forests at high elevations in Central America, mainly in Mexico and Guatemala. My painting was used as the 2014 t-shirt design for the North American Reptile Breeders Conference and is now available as a t-shirt from Eco: www.reptileshirts.com |

Shingleback Skinks
Of the four subspecies of this short tailed, slow moving, blue-tongued Australian skink, Tiliqua rugosa aspera is the only one native to eastern Australia. I caught my first specimen of this beautiful lizard over forty years ago, and it has remained one of my favourite lizards, ever since. The red flowering shrub depicted in the painting is the Bottlebrush or Callistemon. |

Bearded Dragon
I came across the fallen gum tree, depicted in this painting, whilst hiking in Wilpena Pound, an ancient volcano in South Australia. There were plenty of Bearded Dragons in the area and it was an obvious choice for this composition. |

Knob-Tailed Gecko
I had to give this marvelous little gecko a reason for pumping himself up on tip-toes, in an attempt to look bigger than he was, so I included a Bredl's Python on the hunt for prey. They are both found amongst the red rock outcrops of central Australia. |

Leopard Gecko
The naturally marked, wild-caught, individuals portrayed in this painting are something of a rarity, in the hobby, these days. Leopard Geckos are no longer imported from their home in Afghanistan and Pakistan, for the pet trade. Their bright colours and docile nature have helped them become one of the most popular of pets and they are now available in a huge range of 'designer' colour morphs. |

Leopard Gecko variations
A couple of years ago I was asked to spend a week as 'artist in residence' at the Nature in Art Museum, in the UK. Some colourful Leopard Geckos were the obvious choice, as subjects to paint, during my stay. With their attractive colours and quiet disposition they were the perfect first reptile encounter for many of the visiting public and parties of school children. |

Komodo Dragon (juvenile)
'Slash' was the first Komodo to be bred in Europe, as part of Jim Pether's breeding project, in the Canary Islands. He looked so good, I just had to paint him. Once hatched, juvenile Komodo Dragons live a mostly arboreal life until large enough to avoid predation by the adults. The small Draco lizard, also depicted, would be a welcome prey item for a young Komodo Lizard, during this period. |

Lace Monitor
Specimens of the 'Bell' form of the Australian Lace Monitor are individually marked. This specimen was owned by the late Steve Irwin (the Croc Hunter) who named him 'Smiley' after the smiley face-like markings on the back of the lizard's head and neck. I'll always be grateful for the generosity shown by Steve and the staff at Australia Zoo for allowing me access to their fantastic collection of animals. |

Mexican Beaded Lizard
I came across the stump of this ancient tree, whilst hiking in the deserts of Arizona. As soon as I saw it I knew that it would make the perfect background for a painting of a Gila Monster or Beaded Lizard as it climbed around in its search for a bird nest full of eggs or chicks. |

Land Iguana (Conolophus subcristatus)
This was the first painting that I completed after my visit to the wonderful Galapagos Islands. It was an awesome experience and I could easily spend the rest of my life painting its amazing wildlife. The painting depicts Land Iguanas on their South Plaza island home. Also depicted is a specimen of the Galapagos Lava Lizard (Microlophus albemariensis) amongst the Giant Prickly Pear Cactus and the colourful Carpetweed. |

Canary Island Lizards
Each of the main islands in the Canaries has a ‘giant’ species of Gallotia lizard. The largest is found on Gran Canaria. I positioned the various species, within the painting, according to the position of the islands on which they are found. |
