Boelen's Python
Although basically a black and white snake, the beauty of the Boelen's Python (Morelia Boeleni) lies in the wonderful iridescence of its scales. The superb Ulysses Butterfly, feeding on Hibiscus flowers, is included in the design. The original oil painting was entered into the Wildscape 2009 wildlife art competition and gained Tell the award of Runner-up Wildlife Artist of the Year. |

Sonoran Coralsnake
Being a significantly venomous snake, from Arizona, we decided to add an illustration of this species to the collection of paintings for the book on Arizona Rattlesnakes. (Not that I needed an excuse to paint such a beautiful species!). |

Mexican Gartersnake
When exploring the wetland habitat of this rare snake, I came away with more than just a concept for the painting ...... 'Chigger' bites!!! The Mexican Gartersnake is a protected species in Arizona. It was thought to be extirpated in New Mexico but it has recently been rediscovered. |

New Mexico Ridge-nosed Rattlesnake
(in situ) My quest to photograph this protected rattlesnake, in its natural habitat, took me to the Peloncillo Mountains. Being a very remote and potentially dangerous area, on the Mexican border, added to the excitement. The painting has been chosen as the cover for the book on Arizona Rattlesnake, to be published by Eco. |

Mohave Desert Sidewinder Rattlesnake
(Crotalus cerastes cerastes) There are three subspecies of this iconic rattlesnake found in Arizona. Although they are all very similar in appearance, I decided to produce an illustration of each subspecies for the 'Rattlesnakes of Arizona' book. The newest rattle segment of the Mojave subspecies is always brown. |

Sonoran Desert Sidewinder Rattlesnake
(Crotalus cerastes cercobombus) Another one of the three subspecies of Sidewinder found in Arizona. All of the sidewinders are adapted to survive in hot, sandy, barren deserts and are renowned for their ability to move rapidly across the sand in a sidewinding motion. The newest rattle segment of the Sonornan Desert Sidewinder is always black. |

Colorado Desert Sidewinder Rattlesnake
(Crotalus cerastes laterorepens) The third subspecies of this species in Arizona usually has 23 scale rows at mid-body (the other two subspecies usually have 21 rows). It is found in the southwest part of the range of the species. As all three subspecies are quite similar I decided to break away from my usual composition format and portray a full body image of the Colorado Desert Sidewinder. |

Midget Faded Rattlesnake
(Crotalus oreganus concolor) This was the last of the paintings produced for the 'Rattlesnakes of Arizona' book. In my quest for detailed information on this snake I was able to locate and photograph several specimens from elsewhere within its range, but never able to track down any specimens from their very limited range within Arizona. The dorsal markings of Arizona specimens do not appear to be as 'faded' as specimens from elsewhere and analysis of their DNA was employed to confirm their identity. |

Ball Python
Painted in the days when adult, wild-caught, Ball Pythons were imported for the pet trade, this painting shows a specimen wrapped in a defensive ball, a characteristic trait that gave them their name. Nowadays, these beautiful snakes are bred in captivity and are available in a myriad of stunning colour forms. |
