Allen's Hummingbird
Allen's Hummingbird (Selasphorus sasin) with Hummingbird Trumpet flowers. Rufous and Allen's Hummingbirds are very similar in appearance, so I composed the birds in each painting to show the difference in plumage and help with their identification. |

Costa's Hummingbird and pictagraph
Costa's Hummingbird (Calypte costae) with Chaparosa flowers and an Indian pictagraph. Another illustration for the Hummingbirds of Arizona book. This one inspired by an encounter on a hike in the desert near the Mexican border. |

Rufous Hummingbirds with Sapsucker
Rufous Hummingbirds with Red-napped Sapsucker. My first hummingbird book illustration since my accident. Oil on canvas. When flowers are scarce some hummingbird species feed on the tree sap from holes produced by Sapsuckers (A type of Woodpecker). |

Eider Ducks
Eider Ducks are found all around the Arctic Circle, and are one of my favourite species. They are coastal ducks and dive to search for food on the seabed, and feed chiefly on blue mussels and other shellfish. To capture the details for the foreground, I created a mock-up model of a beach in the studio, complete with pebbles, sand and mussel shells. |

California Condor
Vultures have always been a passion of mine - I travelled to India, at the age of nineteen, to study them. California Condors are the largest flying birds in the USA. Through the efforts of conservationists they were brought back from the brink of extinction and can now be seen, once more, flying over the Grand Canyon. |
